Located 20 miles north of Denver and 20 minutes from the Denver International Airport, Brighton is home to approximately 34,000 people. Its cost of living remains among the lowest in the metro area, the city’s website reports, and it boasts a home ownership rate of 73.3 percent.
Brighton was formed in 1881 and named for the birthplace of the wife of the city’s founder, Daniel Carmichael. In 1902, the city was the temporary county seat of the newly formed Adam’s County, and Carmichael’s home served as the first county courthouse. The first county jail was housed in his basement. Flash forward 125 years: Brighton was named in 2011 and 2012 as one of America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best Communities for Young People. But the city doesn’t just focus on its younger population. In 2012, its thriving senior center was moved to the Eagle View Adult Recreation Center.
Brighton features top-of-the-line medical services from the Platte Valley Medical Center. With 287,301 square feet, the medical center features 3, 3-story buildings, a 78-bed patient tower, and is one of the few community owned, nonprofit hospitals in the state.
There are a number of things to do and see in Brighton, including the Eye for Art program which provides free public art shows, the historic Armory Performing Arts Center, Oasis Water Park, a recreation center, and numerous city parks.
The city partners with Front Range Community College to provide the tech and clean energy training that is in high-demand by local employers. Colorado State University is also close. Public K-12 students attend the Brighton 27-J district, and there are a number of private schools available as well.
