If you have lived in Colorado for a while, you are probably familiar with Lowry Air Force Base. But if you are younger, or newer to Colorado, you may not be familiar with the history of Lowry homes for sale. Lowry is a neighborhood of Denver that was developed on the former Lowry Air Force Base.
Lowry Air Force Base was an Army Air Force base during World War II and an Air Force base during the Cold War. Even from the beginning of the city of Denver in the late 1800s, the former Lowry Air Force Base had its history in military and government purposes. On March 11, 1938 Lowry Field was named after the only Colorado pilot killed in combat in World War I, 2nd Lt. Francis Lowry.
Over the next few decades, the base served as a training center for pilots and specialized in photography, rocket propulsion, electronics, gun and rocket sights, and more. In the 1970s the base added an Applied Aerospace Sciences school. However, by the late 1980s and early 1990s, different parts of the base shut down until it was closed completely. In 1997, the base received the zoning for residential development. Today, two of the hangars exist as the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, and a few other buildings exist as dormitories for different schools.
