The Hip Little Town of Niwot is a Colorado Gem

The town of Niwot may seem like just a blip on the map halfway between Boulder and Longmont but it is actually one of Colorado’s most dynamic settlements. It is the kind of place where community pride and creativity shine and where history is celebrated with verve. The railroad town of Niwot is a little bit quirky but a whole lot of friendly and cool. With stunning Rocky Mountain vistas and a lively downtown vibe, you will know why so many want to call Niwot home.

A Left-Handed History

Niwot is named after Arapaho leader, Chief Niwot, whose gregarious demeanor welcomed settlers to the land in 1859. The word “Niwot” translates to “Left Hand” which is why you will find Niwot in the Left Hand Valley not far from Left Hand Creek. The locals embrace this southpaw moniker often gathering at the historic Left Hand Grange Hall to plan and celebrate community events.

Railroad history is also at the heart of Niwot’s colorful character. The town had its start as a railroad stop where area farmers would converge on Niwot to load their sugar beets and other agricultural products onto the trains. The train no longer stops there but its memory is celebrated with style on the 160 by 20-foot mural by local artists titled “The Spirit of Niwot“.

A Knack for Arts and Music

Niwot is enthusiastically filled with artists and the musically talented. The small unincorporated town goes big every year with its signature annual Rock & Rails summer concerts in Whistle Stop Park. It’s a Thursday evening shindig featuring live music, good food, and beer from the neighborhood breweries. Niwot also has its own community marching band ready to help out at one of their frequent parades.

For a town of fewer than 5000 people, Niwot’s artisan community is more than impressive. You will want to stop by Osmosis Art Gallery housed in one of downtown’s historic brick buildings for a glimpse of the local talent. Pebble Art Jewelry showcases handcrafted treasures and offers jewelry-making workshops and classes. Little Bird is also a must-see if you’re in town.

When It’s Time to Eat

Niwot has no shortage of fabulous eateries including the Niwot Tavern where friends gather for the menu and the camaraderie. Head over to the 1914 House in Old Town for made-from-scratch, sustainably-grown cuisine. If you love Asian fare, you can’t go wrong with Sachi Sushi at the corner of Niwot Market. Chef Tsukasa goes out of his way to offer the best in tried-and-true Japanese favorites and you will be glad you stopped by.

The Old Oak Coffeehouse is a welcoming refuge, especially on a winter’s day. You will feel like you are visiting grandma’s house where the sweet treats are homemade and the coffee is strong. Breakfast never tasted so good as it does at the always cheerful Garden Gate Cafe. If you are looking for a perfectly-made latte or espresso, you might want to check out Winot Coffee for out-of-this-world freshness and flavor.
