Celebrations of Autumn in Denver

Celebrate warm days, cool nights and clear-blue Autumn skies during October in these Denver metro area cities. The leaves in town are turning, and quaking aspen stands along foothill and high country byways spill breathtakingly beautiful autumnal color across the terrain as far as the eye can see.

With seasonal change upon us, we got to thinking about some of our favorite October activities in the area.

Elitch Gardens Fright Fest – September 30 through October 30

During daylight, little ones enjoy free candy along Trick or Treat Trail, rides and interactive contests such as Gross Out for Kids, a food creation challenge to see who can make the most disgusting milkshakes using ingredients such as mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise–whatever they want. There’s a contest for the loudest shriek for kids who love to scream and, of course, the costume contest. Oh, and don’t forget the rides–preferably before they enter the milkshake challenge.

Once evening falls, the ambiance becomes mysterious and scary, with spooky sounds and terrorizing creatures lurking around every corner. Three freaky haunted attractions and a nightmarish trek through a carnival graveyard overrun with hungry clowns keep guests on their toes.

Denver Oktoberfest – September 30 to October 2

Held at 21st and Larimer street in LoDo, this three-day festival began very humbly in 1969, but has become one of the most anticipated events of the fall season in the city. Host to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, Denver Oktoberfest has received a mention from USA Today and Maxim. Meet your friends for some great food and raise a stein of brew in camaraderie, while enjoying an assortment of live entertainment.

Great American Beer Fest – October 6 – 8

Who could possibly resist a chance to sample over 3,000 beers from 700 or so local and national breweries? Head down to the Colorado Convention Center at 700 14th Street. In addition to plenty of tasting opportunities, throughout the fest numerous lectures, seminars and demonstrations address subjects such as home brewing, how to cook with beer and the secrets of successfully pairing beer with food.
